When to change toner, the drum, or both.

It is easy to change every cartridge in the printer when the error light shines, but often, this is not the case. Most laser printers need both toner cartridges and drum cartridges. They often do not need changing at the same time (If you are wondering what a drum cartridge is, check out this article. )

While some laser printers have a single compartment for the toner and drum, some don’t (In fact, Brother and Dell have hardly any models that use a

single compartment), and they do not need replacement at the same time. There are several kinds of printer drums with varying lifespans. Nonetheless, most printer drums have lifetimes that span from 10,000 pages to upward of 5 million pages. The average drum lasts roughly 3-4 toner cartridges.

If the toner is empty, the printer will fail to print; however, if the drum is old and possibly damaged, some machines may not raise a warning.

The tell-tale signs of low toner are typically easy to figure out, the warning flashes or the colour produced in the print is weaker, but here are some replacement indications you may need to change the printer drum, and not the toner:

Weak Image Quality.

Poor print quality can also be a sign the toner is low. Check your printer’s specific warning mechanism or run a toner check. If the toner levels are high but the print quality still suffers, the drum may need changing.

Strange marks on the printed document.

If your image has strange marks on it, such as ‘shaky’ looking text or large deposits of ink— these are indicators that the printer drum needs changing. When scratches and marks are on the surface of the drum, it can tend to shake repeatedly resulting in thick blotches of toner or shaky text.

Fully Black Page

Certain machines will print a full black page to show the drum needs changing. This is typical of machines that don’t have a built-in warning light or message prompt. Therefore, the fully black page is the printer’s way of informing you that there’s something

wrong with the drum.

Regular laser printer maintenance is important for the lifespan of the printer unit itself. Therefore, it’s important to pay attention to all the compartments that may be causing problems within your unit.
