This Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter lets you connect a standard VGA monitor, projector, or LCD to a MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or iMac with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, Also you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view on your screen what your audience sees.
If you are willing to save some money while running the risk of getting a defective product, I highly recommend this Adapter. As a side note, if you are having problems with your adapter, try restarting your computer with it plugged in.
So for the price this adapter is definitely worth it for CASUAL use. I have used it periodically at home to connect a display to my 13 inch macbook air and it works okay.
