You wouldn’t think that there was a proper and improper way to take care of your ink cartridge. However, if you want to make it last longer and print well, there are a few ways you do so, which will also help prevent clogs in the print head.
Before Installing Ink Cartridge
Before you take off the seal of your ink cartridge follow these steps:
- Inspect your ink cartridge.
- Upon clearing inspection, give it a little shake. If you do this after you remove the seal be prepared for ink splatter!
- If your cartridge has a tab or seal, this must be removed.
- Avoid touching the gold plate on your cartridge. This communicates with your printer and fingerprints, dirt, etc. interferes with that communication. If you do see smudges on it, gently wipe it off with a clean cloth.
Time to Install Your Ink
Check your owner’s manual on how to properly install your ink cartridge so you know the right way to do it! It will save you headaches down the road in the event you do not install it properly. You do not want to break your printer or your brand-new ink.
Once your ink is installed, you can prevent it from drying out by turning off your printer. This preserves the life of your ink. If you unplug your printer after it shuts down completely, this will reset your print head and prevent unnecessary printer problems.
Protecting and Preserving Your Ink
The best thing you can do is to keep your ink cartridge in its packaging until it is needed. This is another way to keep your ink from drying up. Keep them out of sunlight, preferably in a cool, dark spot. A closet or drawer is a good storage place.
Opened cartridges may be placed in a plastic or glass container that seals well. Place the cartridge in it, with a damp paper towel over the opening and then seal the container. For long-term storage, check the paper towel and make sure it remains damp throughout the storage time. This simply prevents it from drying out and becoming unusable to you.
By following these easy-care tips, you will preserve and prolong the life of your ink cartridge.
