This post is to help you with your ink cartridge installation and troubleshoot any issues that may or may not come up.

How to Install Canon PG-245 / Canon CL-246 Ink Cartridge

You should always consult your printer manual before doing anything with your printer or ink cartridges. Quite often there is installation info and a troubleshooting guide included.

  1. First, open the front cover.
  2. Access the ink cartridges by opening the access door behind the front cover.
  3. Wait for the ink carriage to center and stop.
  4. Open the new cartridge. Take off the tape carefully and preferably over a garbage can to eliminate the risk of ink spillage. Do not touch gold parts or you will get them dirty. Then you will have to clean them.
  5. Carefully take the old cartridge out and dispose of it.
  6. Gently, replace the old cartridge with the new one. You know it is in the correct position once it pops into place.
  7. Close the cover. After you close the cover, you will notice the printer making a noise. This notifies you that the printhead is getting cleaned. When this cycle is completed you are free to use the printer.

Canon PG-245 / CL-246 Ink Cartridge Troubleshooting Guide

Common issues surrounding the Canon PG-245 / CL-246 Ink Cartridges are the following:

  1. Getting an error message.
  • Take the ink cartridge out. Clean the gold parts with a clean, damp rag or cotton ball.
  • Put the cartridge back in the printer.
  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the printer cord from the electrical socket. Wait 10-15 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in. Turn on the printer.
  • Try to print again.
  1. Getting an error message with a remanufactured Canon PG-245 / CL-246 ink cartridge.
  • The thing to remember about remanufactured ink cartridges is that they are not originally made for your printer and will not be recognized by your printer like an original will.
  • Once you have installed a remanufactured Canon PG-245 or CL-246 ink cartridge, a “low” or “empty” message may pop up on the display screen. If this occurs, you must get your printer to work in spite of the error message.
  • Take the ink cartridge out. Clean the gold parts with a clean, damp rag or cotton ball.
  • Replace the cartridge.
  • Then press the “Stop/Reset” button for fifteen
  • If you get a message saying, “Please wait a while” on the display screen, the printer should power up again.
  • After the printer is powered up, printing should work again.
  • Once the error message has been removed, the printer will function normally, but you will not be able to see how your ink level. Not to worry though, the ink is full, and you should expect to receive the same number of copies.
  1. Troublesome prints with spots, streaks or light ink.
  • Prime the ink cartridge.
  • Take a damp and a dry paper towel, folding both into a square.
  • Dab the face down printhead of the cartridge with the damp cloth. Ink should show up on the cloth.
  • Once you dab a few times, for 30 seconds hold the printhead down onto the dry cloth. This allows any dry ink to be removed from the ink opening.
  • Replace the cartridge.
  • Run a print test and your printer should be ready to go.

If this does not resolve the issue, the next step is to clean the printhead. Usually, this is done automatically by your printer. You may notice during large print jobs that your printer will pause and be making a noise. If you look at your display screen, it would give you the message “Cleaning printhead” or something similar.

You can run manually run a printhead cleaning on the Canon PIXMA MX492 by doing the following:

  1. Select “Setup” from the menu on the display screen.
  2. Scroll down and choose “Maintenance”. Press “Ok”.
  3. Scroll down again and choose “Cleaning”. Press “Ok”.

These steps will enable the printer to begin cleaning the printhead. It is a 30-second job. After it is finished, then you can run a print test.

You may have to run another printhead cleaning if there are still issues with your prints. Once this is completed you should see better results. Be forewarned, the ink will get low if you run several cleanings right after each other. Then your ink will need to be replenished.
