Best Printer Buying Guide: Consumer Reports on How to Choose the Best Printer Before You Buy

Consumer Reports used to be the bible of how consumers researched products before buying.  However, there has been a definite shift in how consumers make purchases compared to several years ago. Product reviews or durability are not the deciding factors anymore. Buyers are mostly concerned with the cost – whether the printer ink will cost more than the printer itself when it runs out – and product features.

The Printer Dilemma

Did you know there is a battle going on between OEM & compatible ink cartridges? Did you know that your ink and toner cartridges might cost more than your printer? Do you know how different brands of printers compare? The answers to these questions are the printer dilemmas.

In any life decision, we ask ourselves questions using the five “W” questions – who, what, when, where, why and “how” makes the sixth question. We also ask our friends and family for advice. Finally, we make the pros and cons list, right? These methods have been tried and proven true since the beginning of time.

When it comes right down to it, most people choose their printer based on what they can afford or what they are willing to pay. This does not always work out for the best in the long run, especially if the cost of ink and toner are not factored into the expenses after the printer is purchased.  Take the Black Friday printer promotion, for example, most retailers can push the printer price as low as $40 dollars per printer, and then after Black Friday increase the ink cartridges price so much that in long run you are not saving any money at all!

How to Choose the Best Printer?

After all your research, there are only two choices. Do you want a laser printer, or do you want an inkjet printer? The main differences are based on what printer ink cartridges they use. Laser printers use toner cartridges, which last longer, their yield per page is more than an inkjet printer, however, the cost of toner cartridges is much more.  Using a monochrome laser printer (only prints B&W), it can easily print out 3000 copies and bring down the cost as low as 0.08 cents per page. In comparison to the inkjet printer, it will cost as low as 0.20 cents per page. If you only use the printer a couple times a week, the inkjet is the printer for you. If you are self-employed or homeschool and use your printer daily, the laser printer is the best choice for you.
