Will using compatible printer cartridges void my printer’s warranty? That is a loaded question. It all depends on who you ask. It is known that printer companies do not like consumers using off-brand or compatible cartridges. In fact, they try to put every measure in place that they can think of so consumers cannot use any other brand than their own. However, using compatible cartridges will not void your warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act is a law that protects consumers’ rights.
“(c) No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer’s using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection be waived by the commission if 1) The warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and 2) The Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest.”
It is not against the law to purchase off-brand items. It is your printer; your money and a manufacturer cannot force you to use either in a way they prefer. It is your choice. Your decision.
Reasons for not using compatible cartridges
The number one reason for not using compatible cartridges is because if it is determined that the compatible printer cartridges are the source of a problem with your printer, then the factory warranty could be voided. However, that will have to be proven. How will anyone truly know if the compatible product was the cause unless it is directly related to the ink? You will have to speak to the manufacturer and compatible cartridge supplier (many offer guarantees) to come up with the best way to cover the repair fees for your printer, should the factory decide not to honour your warranty.
This is about the only plus side to using branded cartridges, as your warranty is safe. You will not have to fight for it.
Reasons for using compatible cartridges
The most obvious reason for using compatible printer cartridges is cost. Most of us want to save money and generally, brand products are higher priced than off brand. Another reason is that you are protected by the warranty law, which gives you the freedom to choose compatible products. You can rest assured that your warranty will not be nullified unless the actual ink or compatible cartridge is the source of a malfunction in your printer.
